junto vs Syncplay: which watch-party tool fits you?
junto and Syncplay solve the same core problem honestly: keep everyone’s playback of their own media files in lockstep. Both are free, open source, and account-free, and both let a group press play together instead of counting down over a voice call.
The difference is what each one assumes you already have. Syncplay synchronizes playback but does not move the file, so every person must independently get the exact same copy before the session starts, and its coordination runs through a sync server. junto sends the file directly between friends over encrypted peer-to-peer connections, lets joiners start watching within seconds while the rest downloads in the background, and encrypts every play, pause, and seek message end-to-end so relays see only ciphertext.
If getting everyone the same file is the annoying part of your movie night, that is exactly the gap junto closes.

When Syncplay is the better choice

You are on Windows today. Syncplay runs on Windows; junto does not yet (it is on the roadmap).

You want a specific player. Syncplay drives mpv, VLC, MPC-HC and more; junto drives mpv only for now.
